Why local search is harder for outdoor trades
Two things make this different from ranking a shop. Your customers search with intent that changes by month, and your visibility collapses within a few miles of your map pin. A company that ranks first in its home town can be invisible two towns over, in the county where the bigger jobs are.
The usual response is to publish a page for every town within an hour’s drive. Those pages are near-identical, they get filtered out, and in volume they drag down the pages that were working.
What the work covers
- Technical foundation. Crawlability, speed, internal linking and the structured data that tells Google what kind of business this is.
- Google Business Profile. Categories, service list, service area, photo cadence and the review process that makes the map pack move.
- Service pages. One page per job type you actually sell, written around what the job costs and what it involves.
- Location pages, sparingly. Only for markets where you have completed work, with real project references and local specifics.
- Content that earns links. Cost breakdowns, material comparisons and process explainers that other sites cite.
- Reviews. A repeatable ask at the right moment in the job, because review velocity moves local rankings more than almost anything else you control.
How it turns into quoted work
Ranking for “landscaper near me” brings mixed traffic. Ranking for “paver patio cost” and “retaining wall contractor” in a named county brings people who have already decided what they want and are pricing it. We build toward the second, then measure which pages produce enquiries rather than which pages get sessions.
How we run it
- Weeks 1-2. Visibility mapped by county and job type. Competitor gap analysis. Technical fixes prioritised by what is actually costing you.
- Weeks 3-8. Google Business Profile rebuilt. Service pages written and published. Tracking connected so later claims can be checked.
- Month 3 onward. Location pages one market at a time, supporting content, review process, and monthly reporting against enquiries.
What you get
- A keyword and market map by county and job type
- A prioritised technical fix list, with the fixes applied
- Rewritten or new service pages
- A managed Google Business Profile
- Monthly reporting tied to enquiries, not rankings alone

Questions
How long until we rank?
Local movement usually shows around month three. Meaningful enquiry volume from organic search is a six to twelve month horizon, longer in a competitive metro. If you need work booked sooner than that, start with Google Ads and let this build underneath it.
Will you build us pages for every town we serve?
No. We publish location pages for markets where you have completed work we can reference. Bulk location pages are the fastest way to get the rest of your site devalued, and they rarely rank anyway.
Do we need to keep paying forever?
No. The technical work and service pages keep working after you stop. What stops is new content, new markets and review momentum, so rankings decay slowly rather than disappearing. Plenty of clients pause over winter.
Who writes the content?
We do, from an interview with whoever quotes the jobs. Accurate pricing bands and real installation detail are what makes these pages rank, and neither can be researched from outside your business.
